About
The daily devotions are written by Her Holiness the Nisut (AUS) and include prayers and special practices for the faithful, corresponding to the Kemetic Orthodox calendar.

From 1994-1999, the daily devotions had been available exclusively to followers of the House of Netjer. We share them now with the general public so that all may learn from these enlightening and thought-provoking missives.

Feast of Nekhbet
Peace between Heru-sa-Aset and Set

Even gods find resolution after a time; Heru-sa-Aset and Set are at peace today. Nekhtet! We also honor the feast of Nekhbet, goddess known in the form of the vulture, protective Mother who swoops down to protect. May She and the Two Contenders Who are now at peace lend protection and all joy to your lives as we come closer to the end of the first month of the New Year.

Dua Nekhbet! Dua Heru-sa-Aset! Dua Set! Nekhtet!

Thought for the Day:

Great Feast of Amun
Feast of Heka
Heru-sa-Aset Fights With Set

Amun, great Hidden One; and Heka, great of magical words, are feasted today. Honor Them both with incense, flowers and praises. Consider how you can better welcome Them into your life.

Today is also "the day of Heru fighting with Set." Mythologically this refers to the strife between Heru-sa-Aset and Set for the rulership of the Two Lands. In our lives, it is a sign that Netjer is working to straighten out those things which are undecided; even the gods can enter into struggle on our behalf in order to make sure that Ma'at is done.

I pray in the names of Amun, Heka, Heru-sa-Aset and Set today that what is unresolved in your life becomes resolved, and that you never forget that Netjer is out there, making sure that things work out.

Dua Amun! Dua Heka! Dua Heru-sa-Aset! Dua Set! Nekhtet!

Feast of Aset-Shemsety
Sekhmet Repels Set's Shemsu

Today we honor the festival of Aset as "the elder daughter," Shemsety. May She of beautiful garments, the power behind the Throne guard and guide you throughout this coming year.

There's a second interesting festival today as well, the enigmatic "Sekhmet Repels Set's Shemsu." What does this mean? It's a reference to Sekhmet turning back the enemies of the Nisut (as Heru, or the one who is in opposition to Set in terms of the contending for Kemet's crown in mythology). It would be nice to think that we live in a world where nobody, not even Nisuts, have enemies, but reality often shows a different face -- an "enemy" can be defined in many ways, from a person who honestly is seeking harm or discredit to someone who is merely resentful, angry, jealous or otherwise indisposed to another person.

May Sekhmet drive out all inappropriate behavior today, and not just toward "followers of disruption", but in those places in our own lives where we offer inappropriate antagonism.

Dua Aset! Dua Sekhmet! Nekhtet!

Thought for the Day:
"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown!
May your coming be peaceful.

More than 40 Shemsu, Remetj and their families joined us tonight in Dua for our latest Shemsu Naming Ceremony! We warmly welcome the newest Shemsu to our family of faith:

Wesirimani, daughter of Wesir, from Washington State.
Imani is the very first child in Kemetic Orthodoxy to trade in her Rootname (Ma'atemhebet) for her coming-of-age! Nekhtet!

Joining Imani on her day of adulthood were these seven new Shemsu of Kemet:
Parura, son of Ra, from California
Nedjruinepu, son of Yinepu-Wepwawet, from Tennessee
Takhenmesra, daughter of Ra, from Florida
Basthabi, daughter of Bast, from Kansas
Rekhetsekhmet, daughter of Sekhmet-Hethert, from Ohio
Semaysekhmet, son of Sekhmet-Hethert, from Tennessee
Petyua'a, daughter of Nut and Set, from Germany

This Naming Ceremony brings the number of Named Shemsu and Rootnamed Children of Kemetic Orthodoxy to 136. Nekhtet!

We also welcome the following children of Shemsu to our family, guarded by the gods and goddesses of their birthdays, and named for them with Root Names:

Khnumemheb, Ma'atemheb, and Biqemheb, sons of Neferteminut and Terimerserqet of California;
Irwyemhebet, granddaughter of Sekhmetresut of Illinois;
Ituemheb, Deshretemheb, Nebetemhebet and Ma'atemheb-ka, children of Takhenmesra of Florida; and
Akhuemhebet, Iahemheb and Ibuemhebet, children of Basthabi of Kansas.

I am so very happy for each of our new Shemsu and Rootnamed Children. May Netjer bless each and every one of you richly as you enter into your new commitments and lives.

Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!

Feast of Yinepu-Wepwawet (Day 2)

Lots of excitement building around my house as four more people underwent the Ritual of Parent Divination (and became Shemsu, nekhtet!) Tomorrow evening, I'm looking forward to seeing them, and a number of people divined over the last month, for our next Shemsu Naming Ceremony in our biweekly Dua worship service! We'll also be giving rootnames to a number of children of our Shemsu and Remetj. Watch this devotion for news on the new names!

May Yinepu who opens ways open the way for all the new members of our faith.

Feast of Shu and Tefnut (Day 5)
Great Procession and Festival of Wesir
Feast of Yinepu-Wepwawet

We continue the feast of the First Two, Shu and Tefnut, adding festivals for the Nisut of the Akhu and His prince, Yinepu Who Opens the Way.

The Akhu, our blessed dead, are always there for you. Even if you haven't been introduced, there is a whole unseen realm of people who are willing to help with any problem or lend any creativity to any project. They are as near as a prayer and libation at your shrine or at any place you encounter them.

May Wesir grant you a good audience with your Akhu as Yinepu facilitates the process.

Feast of Shu and Tefnut (Day 3)
Feast of the Drunkenness of Sekhmet-Hethert
Feast of the Purification of Ra

Today we raise a cup of red beer in honor of the Festival of the Drunkenness of Hethert-Sekhmet. This festival, more than a simple excuse to get drunk in God's name, is the manifestation of a novel concept -- that even Netjer needs to act in appropriate ways. Why is this festival celebrated? I last told this story, with my own translation of an ancient text, two years ago. Now's as good a time as ever for a repeat.

[In the beginning], God created Himself: One, sovereign of men, gods and all creation. Then mankind began to disrespect Him, saying: "Look, His Majesty has grown old; his bones are like silver, his limbs like gold, his hair like real lapis."

But Ra overheard mankind, and said to His Shemsu: "Bring My Eye, and Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, and the ancestors who lived with Me when I was in Nun, together with Nun Himself! Let Nun bring His ministers as well, but bring them quietly, that mankind may not see them and be afraid. Bring Them into My palace and let them declare Their counsel fully: before Nun, the One Wherein I was born." And They were all brought, on both sides of Him, bowing to the earth before His Majesty.

Nun, the Firstborn Father, maker of men and all kinds of beings, said: "Speak, for I am listening." And Ra said to Nun, "O Firstborn God, from Whom I came into being, and all My ancestors, behold. Mankind, who came into being from My Eye, plots against Me. Tell Me what I should do; take heed, show Me a plan. I will not kill them until I have heard what You have to say concerning it."

And the Majesty of Nun said to Ra: "My son, god greater than He Who made Him, mightier than Those Who were created with Him, sit content on Your throne. They still fear You greatly. Let Your Eye be upon those who plot against You."

And the Majesty of Ra said, "Behold, they flee into the desert; they are now afraid on account of what they have spoken."

And all the gods said to Ra, "Send forth Your Eye, let It destroy for You those who plot wicked deeds, for no one can resist It. Send it down as Hethert." And Hethert went forth and slaughtered those who had fled to the desert.

Afterward, Ra said, "Come back in peace, Hethert, for it is finished."

But Hethert responded, "By My life, when I had power over mankind it was pleasing to my heart." And thus, Sekhmet the Powerful One came into being, and waded in mankind's blood as far as Neni-nisut.

Ra said, "I will not have asserted My kingship correctly if they all die," then called out: "Bring Me messengers fast as the wind!" And they were brought immediately. He ordered: "Go to Abu and bring as much hematite as you can." And they brought the hematite to Ra in Iunu. Then the women of Hethert's temple crushed the barley for beer, and also crushed the hematite. When they added it to the beer bottles, it looked just like blood. Seven thousand bottles of this beer were brought before Ra, King of Upper and Lower Egypt.

As dawn came and Sekhmet was sailing upriver, Ra said, "Good, good. This will permit Me to protect mankind against Her. Carry the beer to the place where She is slaying men." And the vessels of sleep-making beer were poured four hands deep in a field at His Majesty's request during the end of the night.

Sekhmet came in the morning and found the flooded field. She saw Her face reflected in what She thought was a sea of blood, and drank. Quickly Her heart was merry, She became drunk, and She forgot completely about mankind.

And Ra said, "Come back in peace, O Beautiful One." And the Beautiful One of Iunu came into being.

The Majesty of Ra declared, "Let bottles of sleep-making beer be given to Her at the seasons of the year -- one for each of Her servants!" And bottles of beer have been made, one for each of Her servants, since the beginning of time.

Celebrate the end of anger and the beginning of pleasantness today in any way you find appropriate, whether that is drinking red beer, or simply contemplating the Myth of the Destruction of Mankind.

I offer red beer to Hethert today on all of your behalves, that She might be sweet towards us.

Dua Hethert-Sekhmet, Eye of Ra! Nekhtet!

Wag Festival
Feast of Shu and Tefnut (Day 2)
Feast of Djehuty
Saq-Heru

Wag Festival concludes along with Shu and Tefnut's festival, and an Appearance of Heru and a Festival of Djehuty are added to our big celebration time.

It's been a good week here in Chicago, though the weather has been rainy and not very good for going out to participate in Wag-related work in the cemeteries. We have, however, needed the rain, so we welcome it on the day of the Original One of Moisture (Tefnut)!

Djehuty and Heru come out today, the "heart" and "tongue" of Ptah as Creator. (Isn't it interesting how They arrive on the heels of the first two emanations of the Self-Created? No coincidences in this calendar!) May They hope and speak for you all the things you wish to create in your own lives.

Dua Shu! Dua Tefnut! Dua Heru! Dua Djehuty! Nekhtet!

Ihhy (Jubilation Festival) of the Full Moon
Wag Festival
Feast of Shu and Tefnut (Day 1)
Day of Magnifying the Majesty of Heru
Feast of Wesir

We honor the Wag Festival coincident with the first full moon of Kemetic Year. Wesir rises above us, magnifying Heru's majesty. Shu and Tefnut, first emanations of the Self-Created One, show us the way to renewal and blessing.

Place offerings outside under the moon, and honor your Akhu in any way you can. In this way, the tradition of ancient days, the manifestation which is Shu, Tefnut, Wesir and Heru can only be strenghtened and maintained.

I pray in the Names of all the great gods and goddesses of this day that you are happy and blessed with all good things.

Pacifying the Hearts of Those Who are in the Horizon
Public Feast of Hethert; Feasts of Khnum, Ra and Sobek

Hethert, lady of gold and the dance, of beauty and love, comes into the public eye today to bring abundance and joy. Give Her praises! Nekhtet! We honor Her presence as we have been told that this Kemetic Year will enjoy Her special guidance and blessing. A Hethert Year is a very beautiful thing to contemplate, and we are very, very grateful.

Today we also honor the Horizon-dwellers, the Akhu, blessed dead and ancestors who have gone before. Pour ritual water for your ancestors and the ancestors of your land and your people. Remember that Hethert dances for them too, as Amenti, the Lady of the Beautiful West.

Honor also Khnum, the creator, and Sobek, the protector, as well as Ra to Whom Hethert serves as Eye. It is a day of great rejoicing and celebration. Make the best of it!

Feast of Welcoming the Inundation (Day 2)

In ancient days, the coming of the flood season, the marvelous arrival of waters down the Nile from the "Mountains of the Moon" in far-off Ethiopia and the highlands of Sudan, was celebrated at this time. Two dams and half a world separate us from the miracle of Inundation today, but we can still welcome the influx of new material, new knowledge, and new love into our lives, the "Nile in the sky that nourishes all men" spoken of by Nisut Akhenaten.

May you find blessing in all things today. Say a prayer over a glass of clear, cool water, and then drink the water, once you have poured out four small libations for your ancestors, Wepwawet, your teachers, and Ma'at. Enjoy blessing from the inside as well as the outside!

Feast of the Seat of the First Time (Day 11)
Feasts of Behdety, Heru-wer, and Hethert

As we come into this great celebration of New Year, I feel very much love. Even if I am separated from someone by time, distance, or even misunderstanding...I feel very much love and hope that it is felt by all of you. There is no end to this love that comes from Netjer; it is as boundless as the Inundation, impossible to stop as it rushes outward and upward and onward toward that Great Green Sea.

Celebrate this New Year in this month of festival in any way you can think of. Remember that it is a time of rejoicing and contentment, a time to set aside anything from the past year that did not serve us and to start over whenever and wherever we feel necessary. All is new now in this Zep Tepi, this First Occasion, when even gods began. Join with me in celebrating eternal renewal, eternal love.

May all gods and goddesses, and not just the golden splendid ones feasted on this day, bring you blessing.

Feast of the Seat of the First Time (Day 10)
Ihhy (Jubilation Festival) of the New Moon
Feasts of Djehuty, Hethert, Nekhbet, and Nut

I'm sorry the devotions fell silent from Nebt-het's birthday forward (although, ironically She doesn't speak, either!) Our technical connection from the New Year's celebration wasn't quite right and so we were unable to get anything through before today.

However, now I can say....WEP RONPET NOFRET....happy Kemetic New Year!

Lots of very exciting things to share, and nearly 100MB of photographs being uploaded! (Five days, forty Shemsu from five different countries, eight complete video tapes...I'm surprised there aren't MORE photographs!) Here's what I can share with you so far, so you can join us in celebration!

SHEMSU NAMING
Ray B. of Missouri and Christi S. of Indiana were given Kemetic Names as Shemsu before the gathered community, while all of the Shemsu of our faith past and present were named. Ray now becomes Abekhdjehuty and Christi Mawyemsekhmet. Nekhtet!

SHEMSU-ANKH
Sekhmetresut, Tua-Aset, Senamun, Wosretbast, Asetmeri, Nubtshepsut, Herupaneb, Meteruaset and Abekhdjehuty joined my personal family as Shemsu-Ankh, sworn Shemsu who have taken the Weshem-ib oath! Nekhtet to the new princes and princesses of our nation!

PRIESTHOOD ORDINATIONS AND ELEVATIONS
Imy-set'a, Shemsu-Ankh and Second Scribe to the Nisut (Sesh-ka) Ankhkaseshat took vows and was ordained as Imakhu Seshagemseger, "The wise man is found silent." Imakhu Sesha joins our staff of legal Kemetic Orthodox clergy as Rev. David Dean. Nekhtet!

Shemsu-Ankh Senyt-menu, Ma'ainakhtsen, Asetmekti, Mehetibeminpu, and Khenmetaset completed their training successfully and were all consecrated and fully invested as W'ab priests. They join Senior W'ab Sahyinepu as the ritual technicians and lay priesthood of Kemetic Orthodoxy, and will now serve all gods and goddesses and the people of our faith in their new positions. Nekhtet!

Imakhu, First Scribe, and Shemsu-Ankh Inibmutes is now known as Kai-Imakhu Inibmutes, in recognition of her senior priest status and work for the faith. Nekhtet!

W'ab priest and Shemsu-Ankh Ikhet-Itw has accepted Netjer's calling and has taken vows to become an Imy-set'a, or Imakhu-in-training, of Kemetic Orthodoxy. He joins Imy-set'a and Shemsu-Ankh Neferuhethert and Meresinepu in this position. Nekhtet!

FANBEARERS DEDICATION
Kai-Imakhu Inibmutes and Kai-Imakhu Antybast oversaw the re-dedication of the first two Fanbearers and the dedication of a third through a formal vow taken before the people and the great goddess Bast. Nekhtet to Kai-Imakhu Nakhtdeshretiu, Kai-Imakhu Merybast and Imakhu Niankhsekhmet!

YOU MAY NOW KISS THE HUSBAND(S)...
Aset's birthday also saw the wedding blessing of two Shemsu-Ankh, Djehutydjesi and Abekhdjehuty. Both shared their vows before Djehuty and Ma'at and then watched as the gathered celebrants signed their marriage contract and started the reception party! Nekhtet!

....is this a great start to Year 10, or what?

More soon!

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown!
May your coming be peaceful.

Birthday of Aset
The Feast of the Dressing (Day 5)
The Feast of the Seat of the First Time (Day 5)

It is the birthday of the Great Goddess Aset.

Light a blue candle in your shrine or somewhere prominent in your home. Let it burn all day if you can -- if not, light it when you can and just make sure you can see it all day. Each time you look at it, give thanks for the birth of intuition, magical power, and loyal love.

May She Who is Great of Magic appear behind you today to lend prophecy, aid, and comfort where it is necessary, and to bring the power of Ra's Great Name of Creation into your own life. Take Her wings and fly to wherever it is you need to go.

I love all of you. May Aset bring you wonder and joy.

Birthday of Set
The Feast of the Dressing (Day 4)
The Feast of the Seat of the First Time (Day 4)

It is the birthday of the Great God Set.

Light a red or whitecandle in your shrine or somewhere prominent in your home. Let it burn all day if you can -- if not, light it when you can and just make sure you can see it all day. Each time you look at it, give thanks for the birth of strength, masculine power, stamina and staying power.

Think of the times in your life when you have needed to stick through a tough situation, or when you have needed just a bit of extra strength to push through a bad habit or a difficult obstacle. Give thanks to the Great Red One for His assistance in these situations, and approach Him reverently for help in any existing situation in your life where His strong arm could lend you aid.

I love all of you. May Set be appeased and bring you closure.

Birthday of Heru-wer
The Feast of the Dressing (Day 3)
The Feast of the Seat of the First Time (Day 3)

It is the birthday of the Great God Heru-wer.

Light a red or black candle in your shrine or somewhere prominent in your home. Let it burn all day if you can -- if not, light it when you can and just make sure you can see it all day. Each time you look at it, give thanks for the birth of the sky itself, Heru the Elder, Whose Eyes are Moon and Sun.

See the sky spread out in all its glory above you. Are there any hawks flying in it? If so, all the better -- a concrete symbol of His Presence to bless your day. Touch an object made of metal and make a New Year's resolution upon the soul of He Who is Strength, Power, Justice and Protection.

I love all of you. May Heru-wer bring you justice, peace and courage, and bless your life with victory.
