About
The daily devotions are written by Her Holiness the Nisut (AUS) and include prayers and special practices for the faithful, corresponding to the Kemetic Orthodox calendar.

From 1994-1999, the daily devotions had been available exclusively to followers of the House of Netjer. We share them now with the general public so that all may learn from these enlightening and thought-provoking missives.

Feast of Nekhbet, Peace Between Heru and Set

Once the negotiations are completed, peace returns, and Nekhbet crowns the victors in glory.

This is a day to celebrate the end of conflicts in peace, a day to encourage people in conflict to come to the negotiation table, and to give thanks for those arguments which have ended peacefully. Whether it is a civil war, a lawsuit or just an annoying difference with a neighbor, I pray that Ma'at be remembered in all places of conflict today, that She may replace that conflict with peace.

May Heru and Set grant you the strength to see your challenges through to their peaceful result.

Dua Nekhbet! Dua Heru! Dua Set! Nekhtet!

Great Feast of Amun, Feast of Heka, The Day of Heru and Set's Battle

As yesterday we honored the doers of heka, today we honor the Name of Netjer embodying this vital force, as well as Amun, King of All Gods. In addition it is a day when Heru and Set are battling; in antiquity this would've been a good day to stay out of arguments that don't concern you and generally "mind your own business" as tempers might be flaring high!

It's interesting that we have "bad" days as well as good ones in our calendar. The ancients didn't live perfect lives in a perfect world, either. They also knew that some days, it doesn't matter what side of the bed you rise from....there will always be days when things don't go perfectly. By placing days of this type in the calendar, the ancients reminded themselves (and now us) that this is perfectly natural and normal. It is, however, as the calendar -- not every day is bad, nor is every day difficult -- each day is a new day and a new challenge. Meet it with confidence.

I pray to Amun that you find all the challenges in your life easier than you expected, and to Heka that you are able to overcome whatever any "battles" throw your way.

Dua Amun! Dua Heka! Dua Heru! Dua Set! Nekhtet!

Feasts of Aset as Shemsety ("The Elder Daughter") and Sekhmet Repelling the Shemsu of Set

Today we honor two festivals for the doers of heka, the Magicians Who send back illness, confusion, and isfet to the place where it belongs.

I pray in the names of Aset and Sekhmet that you be freed from all the things you believe are holding you back, confusing you, or keeping you from what, who and where you want to be. May She Who is the Mistress of Magic and She Whose Flame Burns Isfet keep you safe and lead you safely toward your goals!

Feasts of Yinepu and Wesir

There are many festivals to Wesir, Yinepu and the Akhu in this first month of our year. Far from being morbid, it's a reminder that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. It is Netjer's way to remind us that in honoring our ancestors, we honor our own lives and legacies.

May the Shining Ones surround you on these days with all Their love and remind you that your lives, like theirs, are never in vain. I pray to Yinepu and Wesir that the roads between us and Them always remain open and Their messages clear.

Feast of Shu & Tefnut, Feast of the Purification of Ra, Feast of the Drunkenness of Sekhmet-Hethert

Last year on this day, I retold the story of She Who is the Angry Eye.

This year, I pray to Her for the resolution of all conflict, peacefully and with healing for all involved. For as Sekhmet is the Angry Eye, She can also be the peaceful Eye, the Eye Who Pleases and Purifies Her Father, the Eye Who Returns.

She always comes back, you know. Even when you're convinced She's gone off for the last time, just as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, the Wandering Goddess will come back.

May the Lady of the Pure Red Garment guide you home.

Feast of Shu & Tefnut, Feast of Djehuty, Appearance of Heru

We had a surprise visit in our Dua last night from Wesir. He offered blessings to those who had remembered their Akhu on the Wag Festival day that was also one of His feasts, and reminded us that by knowing them we know Him.

What a blessing it was to have Him as part of our celebration! Everyone was very excited and His children in attendance, I'm told, were very moved (We don't often see Him in ceremony as He is generally in the Unseen World).

Looking forward to meeting new probationers who "graduate" tonight at my biweekly online appearance. Nekhtet! for your joining our family of faith! We're very much blessed this month.

Dua Shu! Dua Tefnut! Dua Djehuty! Dua Heru! Nekhtet!

Thought for the Day:
I send a warm birthday greeting today ("Heru em meses nefer enek!") to our own Imakhu Djehutymose, son of Djehuty and Ptah, in New Zealand. May Netjer bless you richly in this coming year!

Wag Festival, Feast of Shu & Tefnut, Feast of Magnifying the Majesty of Heru, Feast of Wesir

Today we honor the Akhu and Wesir, their Nisut, in the great and ancient Wag Festival. This afternoon I will visit some of my own ancestors at their resting places, and say "hello" to many strangers, those citizens of That City who have no one to greet them on this special day.

Tonight I will join with the people of my faith in telling their stories, remembering them, and pouring them offerings.

When you go to your shrines today remember those who remember you! I pray in the names of Shu, Tefnut, Heru and Wesir that all parts of your world are in harmony, and that the Unseen World brings you blessings and communication from those who brought you here.

Dua Akhu! Dua Shu! Dua Tefnut! Dua Heru! Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Wag Festival Eve and the Feast of Sobek-Ra

We prepare for one of our largest and most beautiful festivals of the year tonight, that of the "Kemetic Day of the Dead" (for lack of a better descriptor).

Kemetic Orthodox all over the world will go and visit cemeteries tomorrow, honoring their Akhu, the Blessed Dead whose presence remains in the hearts and minds of the living. They will share food, offerings, stories and fellowship with those who have gone before.

[And when it's over, perhaps they'll share their experiences, like one of our priests did last year in this beautiful photo essay.]

As you go out to be among the dead tomorrow, be aware of how their lives affect yours, even now. May They assist you in obtaining all blessings and everything you need. May They bless you as you bless Them.

I look forward to honoring the Akhu with you in Dua ceremony tomorrow as well.

Dua Akhu! Dua Sobek-Ra! Nekhtet!

Half-Month and Pesdjentiu (New Moon Festival), the Day of Unknown Rage in the Duat, Feasts of Sepa-Wesir, Khonsu, and Sebaka (the planet Mercury as a form of Heru)

I was just so excited about the mortgage we signed over the weekend that I didn't want to update the devotions!

We reach the midpoint of our very first new month in the year. What have we set out as our goals, and where are we in relation to completing them? Use these days as time to "catch up" with yourself and make the last two weeks of the month even more successful than the first two.

I have heard many stories in the past few days of people going through unforeseen difficulties. In most cases these are difficulties that began at the end of the previous year, and those that are still being worked out. Have no fear that the power of Inundation will help these to be washed away, to cause them to come to Ma'at. I am praying for you if you find yourself in this situation!

Others find they have a new drive, have found new things (money, desired objects, new jobs, etc.) coming into their lives. They are riding the crest of that Inundation wave. I bless and pray for them too as the new year puts them into a new life, just like the First Time of legend.

Jubilation of the Year's Beginning; Feasts of Khenty-khety (a form of Wesir), Nut, Heru, the Great Nun, Tutu (a form of Bes, child of Nit), Khonsu-Wesir, Ptah, Meskhetiu (the constellation of Set known today as Ursa Major)

What does one do at beginnings? Within the faith we have had some discussions about making resolutions, obeying commands received by Netjer during the New Year's festivities (such as those that came from Sekhmet during Her healing ceremony), and making new starts in relationships and in projects.

Currently, I seem to be more in a mode of completion of the last projects of the last year, but there is a very major development that we could definitely call new and a gift of the New Year:

This week, the House of Netjer will close mortgage on its first temple property.

Suddenly, we won't be meeting in each other's houses or in rented conference rooms anymore. While this property, being called Tawy House ("The House of the Two Lands") is ultimately intended to be more of a retreat/conference center than an actual temple, it will house our Main Shrine until we can gather enough tithes and contributions to build the Main Temple. This is, by far, the most exciting thing that happened to our religion since we started gathering for worship in 1989.

Please join me in celebration for a new phase of Kemetic Orthodoxy! Information on Tawy House events, some of which will be open to the general public, will be forthcoming as we furnish and set up the property for visitors -- but the major obstacles are now overcome and we give great thanks to our benefactors and the Children of Netjer who believed it could happen. Dua-Netjer to each of you for believing in us.

Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!

Thought for the Day:
While I don't intend for this devotion to be a "pitch," obviously things like physical temple buildings do require financial support. You can always find out how you can help at this link. Members of the faith who tithe regularly receive special benefits such as membership in the Hotep List, a daily private message system where the faithful get to talk informally with me and with other Kemetic Orthodox devotees; currently this mailing list is getting more than 20 mails per day, so it's quite active! Nonmembers can also take part in private instruction classes and will receive invitations to certain religious events at Tawy House once they begin. We appreciate your consideration of supporting our faith, and can also provide you with a tax-deductible receipt for your donation.

Day of Opening the Two Lands; Feasts of Khenty-khety, Satet, Nefertem; Procession of Aset

Major festivals continue today. As we Open the Two Lands, we stretch out a hand in friendship and greeting to those who honor Netjer but aren't Kemetic Orthodox: the Children of Netjer who are our guests at this website. May you enjoy your stay with us!

I pray to all the gods and goddesses that friendship and interfaith trust builds between us and all faiths, similar or dissimilar. We need each other in order to maintain Ma'at in the world; no person should be kept away or left out of that unity, that family. I welcome and bless each one.

Today in our continued Inundation Celebration, we honor Ra, Sobek and Bawy, the "Two Souls" (that is, Heru and Set.)

It's a day to contemplate power. One of my early spiritual mentors, Nebet Cara, used to say over and over again, "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should." She said it so much, frankly, that I often wondered if she was trying to suggest I was doing something wrong.

Many years later I realize only that it was a reminder about the nature of power. Power often exists merely to be held in trust for a future date, or perhaps to be held never to be used. Like the oft-quoted martial arts mantra, "I learn (karate, judo, etc.) in order that I never have to fight," sometimes power exists merely so that it's not being wasted, or misused.

Sometimes the most power we have is the ability to know when not to use it. One of the main mysteries of Sekhmet for example, is the mystery of appropriate use of personal power.

Think about power today as reflected in the four gods we venerate. Offer Them an offering as well as the promise to keep your power powerful -- either by exercising it, or by just knowing it's there for when you need it.

Dua Ra! Dua Sobek! Dua Heru! Dua Set! Nekhtet!

It is a day of many offerings for the celebrated processions of Tefnut, Nebt-het, Aset, Heru-sematawy and Hedjhotep. We send out greetings to all the children and beloved of these Names of Netjer and welcome Their blessing and protection in the New Year!

I will be writing soon about my interfaith journey to Haiti that was recently completed. I've been spending the last few days both getting caught up in work after Haiti and New Year's and also processing and thinking about the trip and lessons learned there. Let me preface those remarks which will be coming in the form of a Wehem or two (my personal essay area) by saying that I believe that Kemetic Orthodoxy has found a sister religion in Haitian Vodou.

While none of us lives in the conditions that are daily facts of life for our brothers and sisters in Haiti, much of our spiritual journey is quite similar. Of course, the Haitians would explain that by saying that we are all from Ginen (ancestral Africa) and that God is God. I think we might do so, too, upon reflection. I'll be curious to hear your responses and comments on that material as I attempt to verbalize it.

As we settle into the month of Inundation, we continue festivals: Hethert, Sobek, Ra, and Khnum are among the honored gods and goddesses today.

Even more special today is a holiday of Pacifying the Hearts of Those Who are in the Horizon. Take a special offering to the cemetery today in honor of your ancestors, the Akhu Who shine in Nut's great starry vault. Remember them with letters, like we do here on our website. Remember those who remember you.

I pray to all Akhu that your blessings and protections are secured on this day in the month of the return of freshness.

Welcoming the Inundation
Celebration Feast for Sobek

Today we honor the crest of the ancient Nile. Even if you are not in Egypt, make a special water offering today if you can. I will be taking offerings on behalf of all Children of Netjer to the river today -- but you too may wish to place coins, messages or food tokens into a stream, river or sea today for the blessing and abundance of Hapi, our lifegiver.

We also celebrate a festival for Sobek, the Crocodile Who plies the depths. May His great strength and compassion support you as you paddle along in the waters of your own creation. May You find His fearsome smile friendly and warm rather than menacing. May He carry you home.

The Feast of the First Time
Celebrations for the Mer-wer Bull of Ra-Tem, Yinepu in the Embalming Tent

The Sixth Day Festival of the first month of our new year begins with great celebrations. Last night about 25 of us got together to reminisce about the Sekhmet Healing Ceremony at Retreat and talk to those who couldn't be there.

It was as if the Eye of Ra Herself came right back into the room....the healing continued. So much love, the heat of the sun both removing illness and reminding people how much they are loved....

The older I get the more like a greeting card I sound. Is there anything more glorious than knowing Netjer loves you and so do all your brothers and sisters? Feel and share this healing love, and let it continue throughout the year.

I love every one of you very, very much -- even the ones reading this that I don't know by name. May you be healed in every way and emerge from the light of the Eye whole, sound and happy.

Happy New Year!

The Feast of the First Time
Celebrations for Heru-Behdety, Hethert and Heru-wer

And to think I came home without sharing the incredible announcements from Saturday night's Naming Ceremony and other various elevations and recognitions!

Nekhtet! for Hethertemheb (Hetheb) and Ronpetnofret (Nofret), son and daughter of Shemsu Ahaenituef and Hethertweret, for their Kemetic Root Names. Hetheb is the godson of Imy-set'a Neferuhethert in addition to his mother, Hethertweret. Because she was born on a Kemetic New Year and thus is protected by all Names of Netjer, Nofret is the goddaughter of everyone in Kemetic Orthodoxy (and to quote her, "how cool is that?").

Nekhtet! for the elevations of Ankhkaseshat, my second scribe, and my chief healer Niankhsekhmet to the position of Imy-set'a, assistant priest-in-training!

Nekhtet! for the installation of Shemsu Imyt-set'a Niankhsekhmet, Sahyinepu, Ikhet-itw, Imy-set'a Ankhkaseshat, Imyt-set'a Neferuhethert and Imyt-set'a Meresinepu as Kemetic Orthodoxy's first lay priests. They are now known as Wab priests of their Parent(s) and performed their first ritual duties on Wep Ronpet under the direction of Heri-tep (Chief Priest) Kai-Imakhu Antybast.

I cannot express how proud I am of all of our new Wab priests for taking on the mysteries of purification and becoming ritual technicians in the service of Netjer and Its Children. The ceremony of installation, where each priest was ritually cleansed before the congregation and received his or her "God's Linen" and purification bowl, was especially moving. I look forward to many years of service from them all.

And last but not least, Nekhtet! to Kai-Imakhu Nakhtdeshretiu and Kai-Imakhu Merybast, who add the titles and responsibilities of Heri-sesheta ("Who is over the Mysteries") priesthood for Set and Bast, respectively, to their already impressive accomplishments! We congratulate them on their years of hard work and look forward to the body of knowledge they will add to our understanding of their Parents and our faith.

Congratulations to all these and also to Shemsut Biaytsekhmet and Robb, who were married on Aset's Birthday (Intercalary Day 4) as part of our celebrations. I can't wait to see the photographs -- can you?

Happy New Year!

Dua Behdety! Dua Hethert! Dua Heru-wer! Nekhtet!

Wep Ronpet Nofret -- Happy Kemetic New Year!

Year Nine is upon us with all of its celebrations. We've just returned from a spectacular Retreat weekend together and are now spreading the joyousness with those who weren't able to be with us. I look forward to reading all the stories and seeing all the photographs and content from Retreat on websites that some of you have already started to post!

The Feast of the First Time is the most special time of our year. Festivals for all major Names occur during it, as we renew the year in the face of Inundation, the return of newness and blessing to our lives. Today we honor Djehuty, Hethert, Nekhbet, and Nut as part of this festival. Make offerings and celebration in all your houses! The Year has come again!
