About
The daily devotions are written by Her Holiness the Nisut (AUS) and include prayers and special practices for the faithful, corresponding to the Kemetic Orthodox calendar.

From 1994-1999, the daily devotions had been available exclusively to followers of the House of Netjer. We share them now with the general public so that all may learn from these enlightening and thought-provoking missives.

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown!
May your coming be peaceful.

End of the Kemetic month today (as well as the Gregorian month as it turns out). As you close out one cycle, make sure to set the preparations for a successful new cycle. Zep Tepi begins again with the new month, signifying the second half of our Kemetic year.

As is done on each end of month festival, I give praise and offerings on your behalf to the Great Names of Ra, Heru and Wesir in Their Shrines.

May you see nothing but blessings in this coming time.

Dua Ra! Dua Heru! Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Thought for the Day:
Looking forward to seeing many of you at our biweekly Dua this evening!

As we wrap up the major festivals, we find ourselves into a new Kemetic month very soon. Review your goals. Are you any closer than you were at the beginning of the month? What can you do differently next month in their pursuit?

End of Amun and Ptah Festivals; Feast of Wesir and the Akhu

Make a pilgrimage to a cemetery today if you can. If you cannot, consider a visit to our virtual Abdju, gateway to the Beautiful West. In either case, leave honey, cool water and favorite foods and gifts for your Akhu in shrine today as you did yesterday, in honor of their watchful presence in your life.

Today the Akhu have also spoken in blessing and honor for two new Shemsu who were divined. Nekhtet! for Angel and Lezli who celebrated their "spiritual birthdays" today.

May your coming be peaceful.

The feasts of Amun and Ptah for the month continue, and a two-day festival in honor of Sokar-Wesir and the Akhu (Blessed Dead) begins.

Make a pilgrimage to a cemetery today if you can. If you cannot, consider a visit to our virtual Abdju, gateway to the Beautiful West. In either case, leave honey, cool water and favorite foods and gifts for your Akhu in shrine on these two days in honor of their watchful presence in your life.

During this festival I honor personally the ka of Steve Marsh, a very close friend who was killed in a horrible accident 13 years ago this week. While the years have lessened the pain of his passing, his presence in the lives of those who loved him, his friends and family, has never lessened. As I call upon his name may he be remembered with all of the things upon which kas live, and may Steve always be an important part of the group of blessed souls who watch over my family, today and each day to come.

Dua Amun! Dua Ptah! Dua Sokar-Wesir! Nekhtet!

Feasts of Amun, Ptah, and Min

This afternoon, more Children of Netjer will take the vows of Shemsuhood, and receive their Kemetic Name from Netjer as part of the gift of that experience.

It is always an exciting time to me when Remetj decide to make a higher commitment of their lives to the god or goddess they call Parent. It is indicative to me that the religion, while put into stasis for a time, truly lives on in the lives of men and women who have taken something precious from the past and made it a new and living thing.

At the same time as we receive new Shemsu we are accepting new members for the beginners' group, this time around from all over the world, as young as ten years old and well past middle age. We are very much blessed in this season of Victory. Nekhtet!

May Netjer bless all of you who read this devotion with love and blessings.

Dua Amun! Dua Ptah! Dua Min! Nekhtet!

Mekhir Festival/Feasts of Amun, Ptah, and Heru-Shu

(Upon checking, my devotion for Year 8 II Peret 24/2001 CE January 25th seems to have vanished into electrons. My apologies for it being lost.)

Continue to celebrate the Victory Festival by honoring those things you can be proud of and pledging to change those you'd rather be more successful at. It is never too late to make a change to something. My grandfather used to say that it was never too late to change if you were still alive. With my Kemetic Orthodox beliefs I'd have to say it's never too late even if you are dead -- the Akhu are always with us too, and I believe that through the process of becoming Akhu that changes can be made for the better.

So, in short -- it's never too late to do what you want to do. May Netjer bless you in your choices and your successes!

Mekhir Festival/Feasts of Amun, Ptah, and Heru-Shu

In our fourth day of festivals we also celebrate the festival of the New Moon. Make special offering to Sokar-Wesir after the sun sets today in addition to your festival and regular offerings!

I received a tremendous amount of email regarding yesterday's devotion today. It is fascinating to me how deeply we are affected by hearing what is true being said by someone else, even if we know it in our hearts already. This is perhaps what real teachers do best, I believe. A true teacher doesn't really "teach," but reminds the "student" of what (s)he already knows and has either misplaced, forgotten, or doesn't know is there already. I am honored to have touched so many hearts with my words yesterday and hope to continue to do so with these devotions as time goes by.

In many cultures including our own, the New Moon is a particularly powerful time of hope and beginnings, a time when things "grow" from their current state. Make good choices and good beginnings at this time. Let hope and love grow within you as the Eye of Heru is restored in the nighttime sky.

Dua Sokar-Wesir! Dua Heru-Shu! Dua Amun! Dua Ptah! Nekhtet!

Mekhir Festival/Feasts of Amun, Ptah, and Heru-Shu

It is the third day of the festivals today. Spend some extra time in shrine celebrating with Netjer if you can.

Last evening I had a very deep discussion over dinner with a close friend. We were talking about experiences of touching the lives of unhappy or suffering people, and this progressed into a discussion of what we believe that God intends for Its children (we used the phrase "God," as my friend is a Christian and I Kemetic Orthodox -- a common term for our mutual Creator).

Often I encounter people who believe they are inadequate or flawed in some way. Sinful, wrong, "bad" -- these people embrace unhappiness and seem to believe that they have done something to offend God or the universe and therefore are being punished through bad things happening in their lives. Sometimes, these people explain their unhappy feelings to me by saying that they don't deserve any better, that they are "bad" and therefore their suffering, loneliness or unhappiness is all some sort of lesson or karmic revenge.

I will repeat something I have said often, and will say many times more before I'm done.

God doesn't make junk.

I do not believe for one moment that the Ultimate Creator of the Universe would create a being that It loathed to be around, or a mistake or an imperfect child. Further, I refuse to believe that this Creator, this Mother and Father of All That Is, would condemn a wisp of Its creation to sadness, loneliness, or "punishment" in the form of bad things happening. I do not live in a universe of pain and revenge. I live in a universe where Netjer weeps when Its children weep, where Ma'at seeks to undo all pain, all depression, all loneliness, all Isfet in any form it tries to creep about. In my Universe, all Netjer's children are Its favorites and Its primary concern out of love. As my Christian friend's scripture says:

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them....Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Know that God, in all Its forms, loves you as Its special child. Ma'at comes to all. This I can promise and this I can hold out to you in love and perfect faith. Do not lose hope.

Dua Heru-Shu! Dua Amun! Dua Ptah! Nekhtet!

Mekhir Festival/Feasts of Amun, Ptah, and Heru-Shu

This weekend as I completed a change of residence, I spent much time going through photographs and letters from my many "children" -- the Children of Netjer all over the world, in our 38 states and 14 foreign countries.

When my new shrine room was set up, it was really wonderful to be able to place all of those images and words on the offering-stand, and to welcome Khepera at sunrise in a new and much larger space. During this coming week, a new altar will be set before the shrines. It is a very exciting time for me personally, to know that so much more space in my home will now be available to perform the rituals of the faith on your behalf.

It was doubly wonderful to be reminded of all of you, in your various places and lives, to see pictures of your children and your pets and your houses.... It fills my heart with joy to know that we walk the path of Ma'at together, especially during this festival which is one of my personal favorites. I can't wait for us to get together and celebrate it toward its culmination in our Dua services next week!

Well, it's time to go back to unpacking. Go look at the picture of Netjer's newest baby girl (yesterday's devotion) -- and say a little Dua-Netjer! for her.

Dua Heru-Shu! Dua Amun! Dua Ptah! Nekhtet!

We begin the Mekhir (Victory) Festival of Heru-Shu today, along with two other multiple-day festivals in honor of Amun and Ptah. It will be a week of high celebration in our House.

Victories are happening everywhere! I can't resist. I must share....

Look what Netjer brought us for the Great Ancient Festival last week!

Welcome, Tati!

Tiara Tatiana Taschell Woods (Tati) joined our Kemetic Orthodox family as the pride and joy of her mother, Victoria, and her grandmother, Shemsu Asetmekti. Three generations to make Netjer happy. There is no better blessing than this, no greater joy to share. It makes me very, very pleased to be able to share this beautiful face, and this joyful moment, with all of you.

Today marks the midpoint of our Kemetic Year, a festival in honor of Aset as Sopdet, a star more commonly known to us as Sirius A.

As Sopdet begins Her yearly journey toward the horizon, and then disappears into the Duat for 70 days before our Kemetic New Year, we take stock of our lives. How are your annual goals progressing? What can you do to assure their completion come the time of Inundation? Many things to contemplate as we begin the weekend.

This morning at sunrise the icon of Aset is taken outside to greet sunrise, to "kiss the face of Ra," as part of a ceremony in our Festival Calendar.

This evening, the people of Kemetic Orthodoxy will gather in Dua ritual to sing Her praises. Make it a special day of Aset, She Who is Mighty in Heka, the Throne and the Power behind it. Special offerings, of worth and beauty, are appropriate. Consider words and their impact carefully.

May She guide and protect with mighty wings those who She calls Her own.

Today we honor The Day Set Kills the Rebel. Use it as a special day to put aside those things you no longer need, and ask the Great Red Lord, Son of Nut, to take His strength and push them aside. Isfet is overcome! Nekhtet!

Today is also the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebrated as a government holiday in the United States. Many will spend today honoring his legacy, as a man of God and a thoughtful peacemaker who spoke out against injustice and backed up his principles with action.

It is particularly interesting to me that both these holidays fall upon the same day. May Set's strength also be lent toward tearing down the remaining legacy of the prejudices and difficulties Dr. King lost his life fighting. May we all learn something from his example.

We continue our five-day celebration of the Rekeh Wer ("Great Burning") or Djaret ("Ancient") festival in honor of Heru-wer. In its final day we also honor an appearance of Sekhmet, as bringer of the justice of the Sacred Eye.

Today I will also be spending time with some of our Shemsu and Remetj and their families, at a gathering in honor of the spiritual birthday/ordination anniversary of our House's priest of Aset, Imakhu Inibmutes.

One year ago today, Imakhu Ini went before her Mother and accepted the service of Her priesthood. Some time before that, she accepted the service of our temple as my personal scribe and assistant. She is a hardworking, honest and sincere woman, perhaps one of the most sincere people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I know that my own life has been enriched in knowing her, and so have the lives of the people of my faith who are served by her day in and out as she does everything from helping me to answer my correspondence to counseling, balancing her personal hobbies and life with the demands of her vocation.

Today especially, but every day, I want to say thank you to Ini, for all she does for me, for others, and for her Mother, Aset. Dua-Netjer enetj, Imakhu, a million times true.

Dua Heru-wer! Dua Sekhmet! Nekhtet!

May your coming be peaceful.

We continue our five-day celebration of the Rekeh Wer ("Great Burning") or Djaret ("Ancient") festival in honor of Heru-wer.

Late in the evening last night I received some wonderful news. We have a baby!

Well...I don't have a baby personally. But one of the House's Shemsu, Asetmekti, called to let us know that her daughter had given birth to a baby girl (7 lbs, 1 1/2 oz, 19 inches), and we had learned at our recent Naming Ceremony that Mekti's daughter wished for her child to be brought up Kemetic Orthodox.

So we have a new baby -- so new in fact that she doesn't yet have a name. A second child born to our religion in its modern idiom (with a third on the way, a brother or sister for Dante, who came into the world two summers ago). How exciting! And during the sacred Ancient Festival as well -- what wonderful news! [I'll post pictures of our "newest member" as soon as I get some, (hint hint, Mekti!)]

What a wonderful blessing these children are, to their parents and to their family here in the House. I am happy for all of you. Nekhtet! and may Netjer bless!

We celebrate the Rekeh Wer ("Great Burning") or Djaret ("Ancient") festival in honor of Heru-wer.

Light candles or lamps in His honor; if you are in a place where a bonfire would be appropriate, consider this also. Great lights are lit and kept burning wherever it can safely be done during the days of this most ancient of Kemetic festivals, in honor of He who is in the sky. In this festival we honor the great traditions of our faith that have carried us from a past so distant it lacks history, to the modern day. During this festival we also honor the Udjat (the "Sacred Eye") and the Names of Sobek and Nit.

As I gazed out last evening at the moon I remembered today was the day of Sokar-Wesir, the Tepy-Semdet, or monthly festival of the full moon, the Return of the Eye of Heru whole and complete. This is a time every month to think about what deeds you have done, what thoughts and goals have been brought to fruition. It is a time to celebrate past successes and set down paths toward future ones.

Under His light, may you find blessing and peace. Celebrate your shrine ritual at eveningtide, in the light of the Eye if possible. Light a red candle as well for Nit, Who also enjoys a feast-day today.

We invoke and offer to the Akhu (the blessed dead, or blood ancestors) today in the festival following the Djed Pillar establishment of yesterday. Make sure to leave cool water and honey in your Akhu shrines, and if you can visit a cemetery in person, today is a good day.

Ancestors do not get much attention in "Western" culture. Some people believe that to talk to the dead is dangerous or bad luck, or that once people have gone West they are no longer part of our daily lives. Nothing could be further from the truth. Because of their proximity to Wesir, the Akhu are our best defense, knowledgeable teachers and useful help in many situations in both the seen and the unseen worlds. Cultivate a relationship with your Akhu -- you'll be amazed at the results.

Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Today we celebrate the Establishment of the Djed Pillar, along with the festivals of Shu, Sekhmet, Menhyt and Het-hert (all of Whom are sometimes referred to as the "pillars of heaven" in ancient texts).

Djed is the Kemetic word for "stability," and the hieroglyphic symbol for the word is also used as a talisman to create stability via heka. On this day I bless and create such amulets to provide stability for the people of Netjer and also for society as a whole, to last through our coming year and to honor Wesir, the Name of Netjer to Whom the Djed-Pillar belongs.

Make special offering to Wesir and pray for stability in the world around you and the world within you, while in shrine today. In a quiet space, where your breath goes in and out, you will feel the Djed, the "backbone of Wesir," quietly propping up that which should be upright in your life. Resting upon this secure pillar, even Heaven is held up.

Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

One of our major yearly festivals and one of the oldest known in our religion happens today: Heb-Wer, or the "Great Festival," dedicated to Heru (Horus).

I've included the above link as this year I think the Great Festival should be especially fun for children, or for the child in each adult. It is a time of great rejoicing and enjoyment -- make sure to set aside an offering for Heru in shrine and to spend at least part of the day doing something fun in His honor.

May the "very, very, very great Festival" bring you blessing on His wings.

We honor Set in His ritual Appearance today. Last evening, He came to visit our biweekly Dua, and had words of encouragement and wisdom to share, some of which are useful for anyone to hear:

"You can wake up each day with the feeling and the knowledge that life is going to beat you. Or...You can wake up with the knowledge that you are children of God, and nothing can get you down. There is no fear here. The only fear that resides in this room is the fear you brought. Leave it at the door. You won't be needing it anymore."

Today there are no holidays in the Kemetic calendar, but because of scheduling we will be celebrating one with the Shemsu and Remetj tonight, in our biweekly Dua worship ceremonies, one which is a Saq, or ritual appearance in trance possession, of Netjer.

Saq is such an important, and incredible part, of our religion. It is really something to know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that God is real and wants to talk to you -- so much so that It will manifest within the body of a trained vessel, to share wisdom, knowledge and healing with the faithful.

Every Saq our House has celebrated has been an incredible moment for the observers -- the literal manifestation of everything we believe in. It is hard to put into words what it means to know that God is not only "out there," but "in here" -- right next to us, speaking in our ears, appearing before our eyes. In here. Tangibly, if only for a few moments, but tangibly nonetheless.

Saq is the traditional, official "ritual" part of this Appearance, but Netjer can, and does, appear all the time, if we are but willing to notice.

Keep your eyes and ears open. Netjer is in here. Right now. As close as your breath, as close as your heartbeat, as close as your open hands. In here. Be open to the experience.

Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown!
May your coming be peaceful.

First day of our Kemetic month, and the Lifting of Ra's Heaven by Ptah.

This month has a focus on the establishment (or re-establishment) of stability, both in personal lives and on a societal level. Make your shrine prayers and goals in reference to this monthly focus; you'll be hearing quite a bit from me about stability over the next 30 days.

May Ptah establish Heaven appropriately, thus enabling Earth to follow.

Dua Ptah! Nekhtet!

Thought for the Day:
"Experience is one thing you can't get for nothing."
Oscar Wilde
