About
The daily devotions are written by Her Holiness the Nisut (AUS) and include
prayers and special practices for the faithful, corresponding to the Kemetic Orthodox
calendar.
From 1994-1999, the daily devotions had been available exclusively to followers
of the House of Netjer. We share them now with the general public so that all may
learn from these enlightening and thought-provoking missives.

Daily Devotions from Her Holiness Nisut Hekatawy I (ankh udja seneb) November 30, 2000
Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Ptah-Sokar-Wesir Festival continues today with the "Feast of Sokar-Wesir."
Celebrate with food and gifts at your shrine, for today we know that the Akhu are safe, safe in the arms of Our Father Wesir. Celebrate with other Remetj and Shemsu. Have a good day today and remember your Akhu as well as your living friends and loved ones.
Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Ptah-Sokar-Wesir Festival continues today with the "Night Vigil of Nit." Nit represents the passage of Time; as Nebt-Het She is also the Friend of the Dead. I hope that as many of our Shemsu and Remetj are able attend tonight's Dua ceremonies, as we will be recalling the Lamentations of Aset and Nebt-Het and marking the transition of the Festival of Wesir from mourning to celebration, of the night into the daytime.
From this point of our festival forward, focus not on the past but on the present -- on what the past has left behind as its seed, its gift, to carry you into tomorrow. Wesir is transformed, made into an Akh, Nisut of the Akhu Themselves. Nekhtet!
Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: "Hail to You, O Wesir, Foremost of Westerners, on this beautiful day of Your appearance! May You be well pleased with me today. May You drive off my difficulties; may You hear when I call; May You come forth due to all that I say to You this beautiful day." from a 12th Dynasty hymn to Sokar-Wesir

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Ptah-Sokar-Wesir Festival continues today with the feasts of "Mourning" and "Destroying the Serpent."
Make a list of all those things (situations, habits, problems, obstacles) which you wish to overcome this year. Before Wesir make a vow that Isfet will be undone and Ma'at will be done, then place the list in your shrine. Periodically take the list out and cross off those items you have overcome as you do so. When the list is empty, offer it to Netjer and destroy it.
As Wesir vanquished the fear of death by willingly going there Himself, may you find the courage and the strength to overcome your own challenges.
Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Ptah-Sokar-Wesir Festival continues today with the "Night of Vigil" or "Night of Death" -- the night honoring the passing of beloved Wesir to the Horizon.
After sunset, make a special offering on behalf of all "Wesirs" -- the blessed dead. The names of all Akhu will be read from the rolls kept in a book in our main shrine and they will be given offerings of cool water, honey and the blessings of Netjer to honor Their passings as well.
May all the stars in Nut's bosom receive our prayers and thanks today.
Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: The Night of Death is also a good day to mark endings. Whether this takes the form of making a resolution to end a negative habit, or to honor those things which are now in the past, endings are doorways to other beginnings.

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
The days of Ptah-Sokar-Wesir Festival are upon us. Rejoice: for life shall spring up from the places whence there was none visible before, and the mystery of process, the growth of something from seeming nothing, begins again.
If you can offer a green plant in your shrine during the next ten days, do so; if not, offer a token of a manifestation of growth, whether that be a listing of goals accomplished, new goals being made, or something else of meaning to you personally. Pray for continual growth from this time forward, that Wesir's gift of life manifests in a blessing.
May He Who is Foremost of Westerners, who greets our Akhu kindly, turn His gentle face unto us, sending us the growth from nowhere, the life from death, which is the cycle of the world itself.
Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Pray today for all of Netjer's creations.
Pray for children, the elderly, the innocent and the not-so-innocent. Pray for the stranger and your neighbor. Pray for your loved ones and those you do not consider friends. Pray for animals and people, the land and the ancestors.
Pray for Netjer's blessing on all these, and yourself, today.

We honor Ptah-Sokar-Wesir in festival and hold special sunrise services to remember all the prayers of the faithful. If you'd like a prayer added to my daily sunrise list, click on the link at the end of this devotion and know it will be added when it is received! You do not have to be Kemetic Orthodox to be included in my daily prayers.
When you have a quiet moment today, tell Netjer something that you have been thinking about. There is no reason to feel like you can't just have a talk with your Creator -- Netjer is right here, right now, within reach. Put out your hands.

The Feast of Ptah-Sokar begins today, continuing through the end of our Kemetic month (10 days). We honor the Lord of Creation and new beginnings by keeping indoors today -- in antiquity it was believed that Netjer Itself walked the earth today and it was good to stay inside as Netjer journeyed to the place where the high holy days of Ptah-Sokar-Wesir, starting in the next five days with the New Moon, would be held.
Make sure to add a prayer in your shrine today for any new beginnings you would like to undertake. This is perhaps the luckiest time of year to set goals and begin them. Think carefully about what you say and do during this most auspicious time.
Dua Ptah-Sokar! Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: Interestingly enough the beginning of the Ptah-Sokar Festival coincides with a major holiday in the United States called "Thanksgiving." Read here and here for two stories about how people celebrate this holiday; not everyone considers it a holiday marking a "good" event.

Soaring Falcon Festival comes to a close today in the Feast of Closure. We ready for the high holy days of the Mysteries of Wesir beginning in a few days.
Most people I have talked to in the past month or so have been going through personal changes of differing degrees. This also holds true for me, as I'm taking time off for surgery this coming week. Some people have gone through some really drastic or sudden changes; others merely the culmination of events that started earlier in the year or even before Kemetic New Year.
This is a process, the process of change that precedes each Wesir festival. Wesir is the growth beneath the surface, the changes which come before the changes you can observe. Even He goes through a period of latency before springing forth as the Nisut of the Akhu. Even He goes through this process.
Pray to Wesir for good changes during this process of His. Pay attention to His messages. While He may not speak with a very loud voice, He does speak with a very confident one.

Soaring Falcon Festival continues. The server system appears to be working but is somewhat slow; we'll do our best to post devotions as quickly as possible!
Today I would like to ask for prayers for the family of an Oriental Institute colleague and friend, Bill Murnane, who went to the Horizon this past Friday during an emergency surgery. His passing was most unexpected and cut short a brilliant career. He will be missed by many, scholars and other lovers of Egypt alike. I pray for his ka as it goes forth on its new journey:
He comes to You, O Nebt-het; He comes to You, O Night-boat; He comes to You, True-before-the Reddening; He comes to You, Birth-brick of Kas; Remember him.
May his years of hieroglyphic training give him much joy as he now traverses the Duat. Senebty, Dr. Murnane. I am glad to have been able to know you.

Over the last several days we have also honored a festival of Sekhmet and Bast Before Ra. During this period it is a good time to ask both of these Eyes of Ra for Their blessings of health and protection in your life, as They are receiving Their "orders" from Their Father concerning the enemies of Ra that must be destroyed for the year.
Make sure sickness, unhappiness, difficulty and Isfet in your life are on Their list before They leave His presence!

Soaring Falcon Festival and the Day of Plowing Earth are celebrated today.
Plow the earth. Cut into the soil of potentiality with the tools of your desires. Lay aside a pile of waiting dreams, thoughts and prayers to plant the seeds of future goals, nourished by the waters of your ka through the coming winter until the time of Emergence.
Make a special effort in your shrine ritual and your prayers today to put out a new seed, a new growth, a new goal. Be new. Be daring, and be not afraid.

In shrine today, remember someone you haven't spoken to recently. This can be any person, and the reason you haven't spoken doesn't have to be a negative one.

Soaring Falcon Festival continues, and today we also honor the Day of the Transformations of the Bennu.
Bennu, the "One Who Shines," is depicted in Kemetic art as a large white bird with a long beak, ornithologically identified as a type of heron. Later philosophers would link this bird associated with the god Ra and the city of Iunu (Greek Heliopolis) with the legendary phoenix bird, said to rise from the ashes of the burning of its own parent and to live for 500 years.
The Day of Transformations is a day to contemplate what you can become as opposed to what you are or what you have been before. Like the phoenix, how shall you rise from the ashes of an old life into the flight of a new one? How can you accomplish these transformations? Much to contemplate in shrine today.
Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: "I flew up out of the Nun. I became like Khepera ("the One Who Becomes"). I grew like plants. I am hidden like a tortoise. I am the seed of every god... I have come. I rise up on my throne. I am endowed with a body. I am mighty. I am endowed with godhood among the gods." from the Chapters of Coming Forth by Day

Soaring Falcon Festival continues, along with ritual processions of Wesir, Min and Khnum.
The priests' retreat this weekend was a well-used and productive time, ending with a shared celebration with the Midwest Buddhist Temple in Chicago as part of the "World in our Backyard" series of shared interfaith services sponsored by the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions (CPWR).
Beyond being fascinated with the service of this Pure Land Buddhist temple, the priest, Rev. K. Ogui, shared some wonderful thoughts with us during our time there. Ogui-san talked about peace and harmony as arising from the acknowledgment and then the acceptance of personal differences. We cannot all be exactly the same, and to try and force this to happen is against the Creator's purposes -- however, to acknowledge our differences and find a way to honor and respect them as well as our own, is the first step toward unity.
During this holy, silent time of year, when we honor Wesir's travel to the land of the Akhu in order to be their Nisut, it is useful to reflect on this idea of harmony through acknowledgment of diversity. Contemplate how you can be more observant -- and more accepting -- of the world around you.

Last night we had the opportunity to pray together and to share the Coming Forth by Day Ritual for two friends of the House, Devon Dickey and Shambo Shankara. This special ritual that is held 70 days after a person's death honors their contribution to our lives and welcomes them into the Beautiful West at the hands of Netjer Itself. In saying the transformations, their kas become Akhu, transformed spirits, shining like stars do on the belly of Nut in the nighttime sky.
Not all of the Children of Netjer were able to be there with us (and for those who could not come, you were missed!), but those who were able to come witnessed the transformations and enabled this wondrous event to occur. As Akhu of our House, both Devon and Shambo can be approached in shrine for help with problems, intercession in issues or even just to talk. In being transformed we assure that they will never be forgotten by the people of Netjer.
Say a special prayer to your Akhu today and add two more names as you offer libation. For two new stars have appeared in our horizon -- two stars for two dear friends. Nekhtet!

Soaring Falcon/Winged Disk festivals continue today, honoring the people of Kemet as a unified force.
I honor Kemet as a people by thinking about all we have shared together. There has been so much over these last eight years to think about. Things that make me happy, things that make my heart sing. Things that anger me or trouble me or even make me cry, too -- no place is perfect and I and my people are not above error.
We owe our strength as a people to our ability to own all of these things, and perhaps particularly the things we don't like to share or remember. We apologize, but we do not move on until we have articulated what we want differently in the future from that point that made us apologetic in the first place. We move on together, not some of us first and the rest of us later when we catch up.
We come together in joy and in pain, and each make us stronger. Each of us shoulders a little part of our sky, and together, we will walk the path of Ma'at.
I pray to Netjer that I will always be able to be part of a people as strong, as varied, and as wonderful, as the people of Kemetic Orthodoxy. It is a good time to be learning and sharing and simply being -- with you.
Dua Heru-Behdety! Dua Hethert! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: I look forward to seeing many of you this evening (as opposed to Tuesday evening -- sorry for the misplaced comment!) as we celebrate the 70 days' Coming Forth of two friends of our faith, Devon and Shambo, in an Opening of the Mouth ceremony in our biweekly Dua.

We begin the second-to-last major holiday of the Inundation season today, the festivals of Heru-wer of Edfu (also called Behdety): the festival of the Winged Disk and the festival of the Soaring Falcon. We also honor Hethert of Dendera, Heru-Behdety's consort, during this feast.
In antiquity this would have been a time to celebrate the institution of kingship as embodied in the Name of Heru. Great offerings were made both to Behdety and to Hethert, and the current Nisut was expected to spend the time in contemplation and prayer, learning about how to do their job from the Netjer that had bestowed it upon him or her in the first place.
Celebrate Heru-wer and Hethert's festival with joy and fellowship. It is a time to honor Kemet as a people.

Four years ago this morning, I performed my usual sunrise ritual before Ra in the Two Lands, on a balcony in the city of Cairo. Later that day, I submitted to the final phase of the traditional ritual of coronation and became the Nisut of the Kemetic Orthodox Faith.
What happened to me four years ago today cannot be expressed in words, so I won't try. I know it happened -- because I am here today to tell you about it.
What I will try to do is to express my gratitude to all those who, upon my return, accepted along with me the charge that Netjer revealed in the early hours of that day, and became the modern Shemsu of Kemet. Without you, there would be no reason to do what I do. Without you, Netjer would have no Children and our religion would still be buried under sand or fragmented into indigenous practices without any coherent connections.
There would be no Kemetic Orthodoxy without you and today should be a day you honor yourselves for your work, your faith and your love, as a family of God in Its Many Names.
I love you all very much and am honored to be able to serve you.

We have no special practices over this weekend, so continue your offerings and goal-setting for the new Kemetic month on these two days.
In your shrine meditation, take out some time to contemplate your perspective. What do you believe about the world around you, and why? What sorts of information do you use to make these decisions? What sorts of processes do you use to gain, interpret, or use that information? Are your perceptions reflective of reality, or simply your take on reality -- or a little of both? Can you tell the difference?
Vision is the dominant human sense in most people. It is also the sense that is often taken for granted: we assume that our vision cannot be false, even though to gaze upon another person wearing glasses belies the subjectivity of that statement. When vision tells us one thing, and another sense another, we often will choose what appears true over what actually is. For some eastern faiths, vision is a manifestation of Maya, the greatest of all illusions.
Is all vision illusion? I do not think so. Pray today to Netjer for a cleansing of your vision, and its constant calibration through the lens of Ma'at.

The first day of a new Kemetic month has us setting new goals, working out plans and preparing for a major holiday at the end of the month, the Mysteries of Wesir.
Make special offerings to your Akhu and Parent Name(s) today in honor of a new month and all of the blessings and lessons it can bring. Consider making a special dedication of a task your goal for this month as it is a month belonging to Sekhmet, She Who is Power. In particular, tasks and goals related to healing and to the furtherance of Ma'at are in order.
