Daily Devotions from Her Holiness Nisut Hekatawy I (ankh udja seneb) October 13, 2000
Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Today we enjoy no special practices in shrine. Spend your shrine time contemplating Netjer and Its blessings.
Today, I consider one blessing I had while the guest of the Kashi Ashram this past week. Within ten minutes of our arrival I was asked by one of the teachers of the River School to come and talk to his sixth-grade class about ancient Egypt. Through this talk, I met some really wonderful young people who asked good questions, listened attentively and above all displayed respect for and genuine interest in the ancient Kemetic culture and its modern keepers, the modern-day Egyptians.
Sometimes people treat children as if they are a waste of time -- always moving, talking, "not paying attention," generally being a nuisance. Children who are treated this way come to believe that it is true, and eventually will metamorphose into the troublemaking brats they are characterized as, if this tendency to misrespect the young is not checked.
Remember always, that the young are Netjer's most obvious gift to the world. The young of any species represent the future. If we cannot respect the future, how can we reach it?
I bless the children of the House of Netjer today as well, two of whom I had the opportunity to meet at our New Year's Retreat. They are my spiritual teachers and my inspiration and I love them all very much and enjoy hearing stories and seeing pictures sent to me by their parents and loved ones. At the Parliament of World Religions in 1999, on the last day when all of the spiritual leaders were to be in the final closing ceremony, the Native American elders present opted not to sit on that stage, but to put the children they had brought along with them into their seats instead. They made a very powerful statement (and those kids were great!).
There is no greater gift than the child. May Netjer bless and protect them all, and may we always remember that in their innocence, trust and faith, children are closest to the holiness we seek.
Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!

Last evening, one of the Children of Netjer, a son of Sokar, was Named before a gathering of Shemsu and Remetj in honor of His Father's festival today (and His beloved's festival yesterday).
We give a hearty Nekhtet! in honor of Sokarseneb who joins the company of Netjer's Shemsu in the modern world, the brothers and sisters of the Kemetic Orthodox faith.
Celebrate! Netjer has claimed another Child!

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Opet Festival continues in its eleventh, and final, day. Dua Amun, Mut and Khonsu for another happy year!
Last night we had a record 3-hour Dua session, honoring and sharing stories of Akhu. We heard about Akhu from all walks of life, some who lived long lives, others short. We heard about Akhu who made the best against adversity -- or were taken from us too soon.
What we heard is that we all have a family in the West, and that our family in the West hears us. We shared stories that were touching, sometimes bittersweet and always uplifting. We shared them like we share the Letters to the Dead with our friends and family both in the West and here among the living. We honored them well.
I wanted to add one more Akhu to our consideration for the Feast of the Beautiful Valley.
His name is Shambo Shankara (although he had been born as "Gary.") I met him once -- for less than the space of one day -- but his gift to me is now my gift to you.
Shambo looked at me with eyes that spoke volumes of lifetimes past and lifetimes to come. While he had experienced pain, loss, and sadness in ways that would make most people blush, there was no regret in his gaze, except maybe that he knew his remaining time on earth was short. It was clear that he intended to use it to the fullest though his ailing body might not permit him to do so.
This holy man told me he was ashamed his illness would not permit him to travel with his friends to deliver shoes and other items to children in a homeless shelter so that they could go to school with other kids.
This holy man told me the best thing in life was to be able to love God and love others through God.
This holy man convinced me that I will never work another job again outside this temple. I will be eternally grateful for that teaching -- the teaching that there is no higher service than the service of the Children of God and that all else is secondary, even your own life.
Shambo gave me a gift I will never be able to repay to him -- but I intend to repay it, over and over again, to all of you, for the rest of my life. Nekhtet to Shambo in the Beautiful West. May his spirit rest safely amongst the Imperishable Stars and hold me to my vow!
Offer all the gifts on your shrines for the Opet Festival today to your Parent Name(s) and to your Akhu, and to all the Akhu of this beautiful House, as we close the festival for another year.
Dua Netjer! Dua Akhu! Nekhtet!

Opet Festival continues in its tenth day.
I look forward to this evening with the Shemsu gathered in Dua for the Feast of the Beautiful Valley,, our celebration with the Akhu of the marriage feast of Amun and Mut.
This is just another reminder to me of how important our ancestors are to us. We share the marriage festival of God with those Who have gone before us, assuring the continuity of tradition. We also acknowledge our link with the ancestors through celebrating the festivals they celebrated, in honor of them and also in honor of Netjer.
How wonderful it is to know your ancestors and to carry on their traditions to new people!
Whomever you call ancestor, may They be honored today!

Opet Festival continues in its ninth day.
What is an appropriate offering to Netjer?
Some people offer their time or service. Others offer money or objects. Others offer the fruits of their labors and the works of their hands.
Still others offer their very flesh, their entire bodies, to be used by Netjer in whatever form It sees fit.
Each of these is a valuable and honored offering. Even a whispered prayer of thanks is an appropriate offering when it is offered with an open heart and sincere love behind it.
What have you offered to Netjer today? What offerings have come to you from Netjer and/or from others? Have you honored them?
Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!

Opet Festival continues in its seventh day, with additional ceremonies honoring Meret, "The Beloved," a form of Nebt-het, today.
As we reach the center of the Opet Festival our celebrations turn to honoring those on the Other Side of life -- our Akhu, the Blessed Dead who are in the West. It is only appropriate that as we shift our attention to the Akhu that we honor the Beloved Nebt-Het, Friend of the Dead, Who enables them to begin their journey westward, placing their hands in the hands of Yinepu as well as providing for the comforting of grief of those left behind.
While She can be terrifying -- after all, Nebt-het does represent for the Kemetic Orthodox the process/transition of death -- She is indeed our strong mother, Her dark wings enfolding the souls of those She loves, devouring their sins and sadness and transforming them into the shining souls that are the stars of the evening sky. To those who understand death to be a transition point between two kinds of life, She is indeed Beloved.
Know that Nebt-het is there for those who die as well as those who go on living and be blessed in this knowledge. Make special offerings to Her and to your Akhu of cool water today, particularly at the base of a tree or at a cemetery gate.

Opet Festival continues in its sixth day, with additional ceremonies honoring Heru and Set today.
Think about the things in your life which seem on the surface to be "opposing." When you really think about them...are they truly in opposition? Can their "difference" actually be a strength where each factor can actually complement the others, bringing out new truths and understandings that would have been impossible without the drawn contrast to emphasize them?
Heru and Set are not really enemies, but representative of two types of very similar forces. In the same way, you may find that forces in your life that seem to oppose, may in reality lend each other strength -- and once this truth is learned, these forces can be controlled.
May the Two Who Contend become the Two Who Are in Peace in your life.
Dua Heru! Dua Set! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: "Reed and papyrus were placed on the double door of the House of Ptah. This means Heru and Set, at peace and united. They associate in order to cease quarrelling in any place they are, united in the House of Ptah, and they are the Balance of the Two Lands in which Upper and Lower Kemet have been weighed." from the Shabaka Stone (Memphite Theology)

Opet Festival continues in its fourth day, with additional ceremonies honoring Khnum, Anqet and Meret today.
The Festival has turned to the south, to honor the Names associated with the bringing of the Inundation itself: the Names of the city of Abu (Elephantine) at the First Cataract. In a dream, Khnum told one of the Nisuts that He alone held the secret of renewal, in the rocks below His island city...and that He alone could bring health, prosperity and bounty to all.
Give offering and prayer to Khnum today for peace, health, wealth and abundance in the New Year.

Opet Festival continues in its third day, with additional ceremonies honoring Wesir for a second day.
I cannot express how wonderful Wesir the Father of the Ancestors is...His expression, His gentle face turned upon those who are His subjects as well as those of us who live here on this side of the veil missing them. I am reminded of Him through the love and gentle care of one of His daughters here in the House, every day.
Wesir's daughter Senni is recovering from surgery, and while she'll probably be embarrassed at me drawing attention to this, I would like for everyone to say a prayer on her behalf for a speedy and complete recovery. She has shown me a great deal of what it is to be strong, strong like Her Father is strong. Dua-Netjer for my having the honor of knowing her.
When you say your prayers today honoring Wesir, don't forget to honor His children in the world, who help to bring balance and peace to the living as well as grace and peace to the dead.
Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Opet Festival continues in its second day, with additional ceremonies honoring Nit, Wesir and the Udjat, or Sacred Eye of Heru.
These three Names (or two Names and one Name's symbol) have in common their fond and strong protection of people, the children They love. Nothing will stand in the way of Their protecting and loving Their children; and together, as Space and Time, the Lord of the Ancestors, and the Healthy Eye, They offer the blessing of peace and protection to all who call upon Them.
I ask that Nit, Wesir and Heru as the Udjat bless each and every child of Netjer today in this Opet Festival with all health, all stability, all devotion, and all love, today and always.

Today a number of celebrations are beginning! Rejoice!
We celebrate a procession of Aset and a night-time procession of Ra with His Shemsu. We also begin one of the largest and most beautiful of the Kemetic festivals, the Feast of Opet.
Opet is a festival celebrated in honor of the city of Uaset (Thebes) and the King of the Netjeru, Amun. For fifteen days we will pour offerings to Amun, His consort Mut and His son Khonsu. We will spend part of this time meeting our Akhu in cemeteries, taking the icons to the cemetery to bless their resting places. And we will enjoy the festival with much merrymaking, gifts and blessings.
We celebrate as a community the blessings of having a community where Netjer is ruler and each person has a valid and valuable contribution to make. Nekhtet!
Make a special offering to Amun today, that the Opet Festival opening this year be the best one ever! Also send greeting to His children, if you are a Shemsu or Remetj.

We celebrate the festival of Bast, Lady of the Life of the Two Lands, today. Leave special offerings in shrine for She Who protects the Two Lands and the Akhu, as well as the living. Send special greetings to Her children amongst the Shemsu.
Bast is a protectress Whose lifegiving powers are not often extolled in my devotions as Her festivals are not frequent. Perhaps She should be honored publicly more often. Many of Her children serve valuable roles in my temple, as clergy and as Shemsu and Remetj, and in their outside-temple lives as well. Bast is not one of our more vocal Names, preferring often to teach Her children and those who seek to learn from Her by inference rather than direct approach, like the cat She keeps as symbol.
"To understand a thing one must approach it from behind and above" is something a mentor once shared with me concerning Bast, and it is as true today as ever. Walk in the steps of the Invisible Paw and learn what it is to protect and serve.
Dua Bast! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: Bast is also a Name associated with joyfulness (not just simple happiness or sensual pleasure). Do something joyful today in your shrine practice to honor Her.

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Just as it is important not to speak without careful preparation, it is important not to act without forethought and preparation.
In the beginning, Netjer created through the use of Its voice (embodied sometimes in the Name of Djehuty) and the use of Its will (or "heart," embodied sometimes in the Name of Heru). Through Will in Its Name of Heru and Speech in Its Name of Djehuty, Netjer in Its Name of Ptah created all that is within the universe.
Like Ptah, each of you have been endowed with will and voice. Voice should never act without will, and vice versa: the will should never act without consulting the Inner Voice: the Voice of Netjer that speaks to all of us, within our hearts.
An action without forethought, without consulting the Inner Voice, is as dangerous as a careless word -- a piece of heka thrown out into the world without preparation, like a gun fired blindly, may hit nothing, may miraculously hit its intended target after all, or may hit an unintended target.
As you focus your speech, focus your actions, so that they build Ma'at in the world and bring Ma'at back to you. Permit Isfet no means of entry into your body, whether through your voice or your will, and you, like Ptah, will be able to create all that your will can desire and your voice can speak.
Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: "Thus, will and voice rule over all the limbs in accordance with the teaching that each body has a heart (Heru, the heart of Ptah), and there is a tongue (Djehuty, the voice of Ptah) in the bodies of all gods, all people, all cattle, all creeping things, everything that lives: thinking whatever it wishes, and commanding whatever it wishes...sight, hearing, breathing all report to the will, and it makes every understanding come forth. And the voice repeats what the will wishes." from the Memphite Theology of the 152nd Nisut (Shabaka)

Before you speak a word to another person, stop.
Think out the words you intend to speak. Think about how the other person will perceive them. Will you be understood as you intend? Will there be a reaction? Are you prepared for the responsibility for the consequences of that reaction, whatever it is, even if it is not the reaction you expect?
Every single word is a piece of heka. Heka is the building block of the universe -- with one piece of Heka, creation Itself began. Each word that spills from your lips is a universe in creation, each sentence a string of creations which may or may not honor the intentions of their creator. Each word is your child, birthed by you, into a world where it will do what it was originally intended to do only with careful thought and intent.
Nurture each and every word that comes from your mouth as you would your child. You will find that the words you respect will respect you in turn and honor you rather than place you in difficult situations. Honor your words -- and others will as well.

Today begins a several-day festival in honor of Heru-ur and another festival in honor of Sobek, as well as a Feast of Djehuty.
All three of these Names are associated with creation, as have been Names honored in recent days. All three of these Names are also associated with forms of protection: Heru-ur and Sobek physical protection; and Djehuty the protection afforded by heka, or special words of power.
Be sure and leave offerings to all three Names today in reference to needs for protection in your own life. They are each strong, powerful and effective at maintaining and appropriating Ma'at in all situations.

Look closer. Look so closely that you can see the very fingerprints of the Creator, for indeed, they are there.
All creations, from the lowly amoeba to the newborn child, are the masterpieces of Khnum, Potter of the Gods. With His loving, strong hands, callused with millennia of work, I would imagine....it is He Who makes the stuff of potential reality.
No thing on this planet -- not even the planet itself -- does not reflect His tender care.
Be in the world of Creations today. Give thanks to Khnum in darkness, for in the darkness of the Nun, potential begins to be molded into the shapes of the universe.
Dua Khnum! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: "The toughest part about creation is actually to begin. A blade of grass is no more difficult than an oak." Lowell

Daily Devotions from Her Holiness Nisut Hekatawy I (ankh udja seneb) September 1, 2000
Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
As we come closer to the beginning of the second month of Inundation, we prepare for the major festival of Opet, honoring the Holy Family of Waset: Amun, Mut and Khonsu.
Rejoice -- for the Inundation is rising, bringing with it the joy of a new year and new ideas, new beginnings and blessings from Netjer. What will you begin? What will you bring to Netjer as part of your New Year resolution?
May the Holy Family bless you with life, prosperity, health and all good things today and every day.
Dua Amun! Dua Mut! Dua Khonsu! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: "Work joyfully and peacefully, knowing that right thoughts and right efforts inevitably bring about right results." James Allen
