Daily Devotions from Her Holiness Nisut Hekatawy I (ankh udja seneb) August 31, 2000
Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Today we honor the Feast of Nekhbet and the Day of Peace between Heru and Set.
Peace begins when understanding begins. Peace is what happens when people have respect for themselves and also for each other. Peace is not possible without an open mind, a loving heart, and empty hands.
Peace is not difficult but often appears that way because it cannot be approached except deliberately. It is a choice and not a chance. It is something everyone needs for themselves, and by extension for everyone. Peace, just like its opposites, grows or withers according to the amount of attention it is given.
I ask Nekhbet the protective Mother to grant all of Her children the gift of peace in all its forms, so that they might carry it forth to the world with the strength of the Reconciled Contenders, Heru and Set.
Dua Nekhbet! Dua Heru! Dua Set! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: "Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice." Baruch Spinoza

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
I look forward to seeing Shemsu and Remetj in our biweekly Dua services tonight in honor of New Moon and Wesir. We'll also honor today's Names, Amun and Heka.
It was wonderful to meet with some of you over the weekend at our Midwest area gathering and to share with you a visit to the Kemetic ancestors at the Field Museum. Dua-Netjer for coming and sharing that with us! Photographs of this and our retreat and some other recent events should start appearing on the boards soon -- I know our web team is hard at work.
While it is easy often to think of this only as an online endeavor, things are happening offline, more than ever -- which is so very exciting! It is truly Netjer's blessing that Its people are able to gather, in small numbers or large, physically as well as via media like the Internet. How lucky we are to have each other!
May Amun, the Hidden One, and Heka, the Authoritative Speech, remind us that we are never alone and that all one has to do is reach out.
Dua Amun! Dua Heka! Nekhtet!

Over this weekend, we celebrate the Festival Processions of Wesir and Yinepu. Foremost of the Westerners, both the Nisut of the West and the Opener of the Ways enable the Akhu to work on your behalf, and permit our two worlds to interact.
Blessings on all the children of these Names. Your Fathers have given us a remarkable gift.

The end of the Shu and Tefnut Festival happens today, and a small festival in honor of Wesir completes the week of contemplating our ancestors.
Today I give thanks to my ancestors for past successes as well as beginning a very successful future. Pour water and leave offerings that your Akhu may celebrate these days with you, too.

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Today we raise a cup of red beer in honor of the Festival of the Drunkenness of Hethert-Sekhmet.
This festival, more than a simple excuse to get drunk in God's name, is the manifestation of a novel concept -- that even Netjer needs to act in appropriate ways.
Why is this festival celebrated?
[In the beginning], God created himself: One, sovereign of men, gods and all creation. Then mankind began to disrespect Him, saying: "Look, His Majesty has grown old; his bones are like silver, his limbs like gold, his hair like real lapis." But Ra overheard mankind, and said to His Shemsu: "Bring My Eye, and Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, and the ancestors who lived with Me when I was in Nun, together with Nun Himself! Let Nun bring His ministers as well, but bring them quietly, that mankind may not see them and be afraid. Bring Them into My palace and let them declare Their counsel fully: before Nun, the One Wherein I was born." And They were all brought, on both sides of Him, bowing to the earth before His Majesty.
Nun, the Firstborn Father, maker of men and all kinds of beings, said: "Speak, for I am listening." And Ra said to Nun, "O Firstborn God, from Whom I came into being, and all My ancestors, behold. Mankind, who came into being from My Eye, plots against Me. Tell Me what I should do; take heed, show me a plan. I will not kill them until I have heard what You have to say concerning it."
And the Majesty of Nun said to Ra: "My son, God greater than He who made Him, mightier than those Who were created with Him, sit content on Your throne. They still fear You greatly. Let Your Eye be upon those who plot against You."
And the Majesty of Ra said, "Behold, they flee into the desert; they are now afraid on account of what they have said."
All the gods said to Ra, "Send forth Your Eye, let It destroy for You those who plot wicked deeds, for no one can resist It. Send it down as Hethert." And Hethert went forth and slaughtered those who had fled to the desert. Afterward, Ra said, "Come back in peace, Hethert, for it is finished."
But Hethert responded, "By My life, when I had power over mankind it was pleasing to my heart." And thus, Sekhmet the Powerful One came into being, and waded in mankind's blood as far as Neni-nisut.
Ra said, "I will not have asserted my kingship correctly if they all die," then called out: "Bring me messengers fast as the wind!" And they were brought immediately. He ordered: "Go to Abu and bring as much hematite as you can." And they brought the hematite to Ra in Iunu. Then the women of Hethert's temple crushed the barley for beer, and crushed the hematite. When they added it to the beer bottles, it looked just like blood. Seven thousand bottles of this beer were brought before the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Ra.
As dawn came and Sekhmet was sailing up the river, Ra said, "Good, good. This will permit Me to protect mankind against Her. Carry the beer to the place where She is slaying men." And the vessels of sleep-making beer were poured four hands deep in a field at His Majesty's request during the end of the night.
Sekhmet came in the morning and found the flooded field. She saw Her face reflected in what She thought was a sea of blood, and drank. Quickly Her heart was merry, She became drunk, and She forgot completely about mankind.
And Ra said, "Come back in peace, O Beautiful One." And the Beautiful One of Iunu came into being.
The Majesty of Ra declared, "Let bottles of sleep-making beer be given to Her at the seasons of the year -- one for each of Her servants!" And bottles of beer have been made, one for each of Her servants, since the beginning of time.
Celebrate the end of anger and the beginning of pleasantness today in any way you find appropriate, whether that is drinking red beer, or simply contemplating the Myth of the Destruction of Mankind.
I offer red beer to Hethert today that She might be sweet towards us.
Dua Hethert-Sekhmet, Eye of Ra! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: Ma'at is always present in our lives, even on days when it seems that the "normal order" of things is set aside for merriment, such as today. Should your festivities include alcohol, drink safely and responsibly (the myth says one bottle per participant, folks) -- and don't you dare drive.

After (and actually, technically, beginning during) the Wag Festival we have a two-day Festival for Shu and Tefnut, the first two children of Creation, Who became Earth (Geb), Sky (Nut), and all the constituents of the universe we inhabit.
How appropriate as we honor the Akhu we also honor the Creation that brings us all together, in all our worlds, under Netjer.
We honor today also Djehuty, Who spoke the words of Creation; and Heru; Who willed them to occur. In doing so we come full circle and give praise and thanks for the world, seen and unseen, this world and the next, and all those creatures that dwell within its spheres.
Be at peace in the world today and know you owe it to God's Eyes, Speech and Will.
Dua Shu! Dua Tefnut! Dua Djehuty! Dua Heru! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: Today we also offer a hearty Heru-em-meses nefer! (Happy Birthday) to Imakhu Djehutymose Qedenitu. All blessings and wishes for a happy year!

Happy Wag Festival!
Today, the Akhu speak for themselves:
O every prophet, every priest, every scribe who enters this cemetery and sees my tomb, Dua-Netjer to him who acts for me, Dua-Netjer to any who act for me.
For I was one honored by his father, praised by his mother, kind to his brothers.
I built this tomb in the cemetery beside the great kas who are already here, in order that my father's name be remembered, and the name of my elder brother. For a man lives when his name is remembered.
The West is the house of the faultless ones. Dua-Netjer for those who reach it! No man will get there unless his heart is exact in doing Ma'at. There, the poor man is not distinguished from the rich -- there is only the man who is found free of Isfet by scale and plummet before Eternity's Lord. No one is exempt from judgment; Djehuty, the Baboon in charge of the balance reckons each man for his deeds upon earth.
I give the offering of the "breath of the mouth" here to the Akhu on the Wag Festival, as it has been done since the beginning: an offering which the Nisut gives to Yinepu upon His Mountain, Who is in His Embalming Tent, and Wesir Lord of Djedu, King of the Westerners, of a thousand of bread, a thousand of beer, a thousand of oxen, a thousand of fowl, a thousand of alabaster, a thousand of perfume, and a thousand of every good and pure thing upon which the souls of the blessed live.
May Wesir and the Akhu, and Sokar-Ra Who comprises the darkness and the light, accept our offerings upon this Wag Festival and restore the Ma'at between the living and the dead.
Dua Akhu! Dua Wesir! Dua-Sokar-Ra! Nekhtet!

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
Today is the eve of the Wag Festival, one of the oldest festivals of Kemet and one of my personal favorites.
As early as the Predynastic Period the Wag Festival was honored as the Kemetic equivalent of the Mexican Day of the Dead. The entire population descended on the cemetery, to decorate graves, place offerings of food, libations and flowers, and in many cases spend the night with the Akhu in their houses of eternity.
Wag Festival is a time sacred to Wesir and the Akhu His children. It is a time when the distance between "that city" and "this city" is not far -- and the Akhu are talking. The word Wag can be translated as "shouting praises," and the praises can come from either Side of the Veil, so to speak.
Speak, and listen, to the Akhu in your shrine today as they draw near. Tomorrow be sure to visit them if you can (if you cannot, leave messages for them here in our virtual cemetery if you wish). We are not alone.
Dua Akhu! Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

Two days ago, we talked about belief. Yesterday, we talked about anger.
Today we need to talk about....talking.
When you speak, do you hear the words that you say, as you say them, before you say them...or after you see them register on another person's face?
Do you know what you are saying?
Are you aware that words have more power than simply expressing a thought in one mind to another mind?
Do you practice listening to what you say as well as making sure what you say matches up with what you intend to say?
Today is dedicated to Sebaka, the small fast planet we know as Mercury. As Mercury we have associated it over time with the art of communication. Mercury was said to be swift...and both the planet and the Greek god it is named for, as well as the practice of communication, are. You are reading these words all over the world literally seconds after I have written them, and only a few more seconds than I thought them and committed them to paper.
Because communication is so swift, we must be swift listeners as well -- lest we communicate first and explain second. Don't let your words run away with you; but at the same time, let them go when they must, as quickly and as unhindered as possible, to their destinations.
In the Name of Sebaka, the planet Mercury which in my faith belongs to Heru, may you be blessed with fruitful and honest communications.
Dua Sebaka! Nekhtet!

If there is anger within you, let it go.
Anger has a way, like a snake, of finding the smallest point to hide. Once it hides it will stay there until it is ready to strike out when you least expect.
Anger kept within you is like a snake in a bag. The longer it stays in the bag, the more likely it is to lash out at the nearest possible object when the bag is opened....or to thrash its own way out no matter how tightly the bag is tied.
Let go of your anger.
Do not let go by pretending it isn't there -- this is just another way of holding it in.
Do not let go by attacking the first available target -- it may not be the intended one, and your response may not be appropriate.
Confront your anger, acknowledge it and why it is there. Is it justified? Is it the anger of now, and not the collective angers of a thousand days topped off with today's small injustice? Is it really anger and not something else hiding behind an angry mask?
Feel your anger, allow it to well up...and then let it go.
Like water crests over a wall and becomes a beautiful waterfall, allow your anger to cascade away and off from you, dissipating. Free your anger and it will free you. Free it to cleanse your body, not to use as a weapon to beat down another. Let it be what it is -- and then let it be gone.
In the Name of Wesir, may you learn to still your anger and permit it to be turned into other forms of energy. Do not keep it -- for anger does not have a long, or stable, shelf life.
Dua Wesir! Nekhtet!

We celebrate Jubilation at the Year's Beginning today.
I woke this morning during a terrific rainstorm. The Water was falling so fast that it looked like it was being poured from the sky rather than dripping from it. As I watched the water on the balcony collect and the cold mist rising from it as the sun rose before I was to do my morning prayers...I thought of the Nun, one of the Names to be venerated today.
It is appropriate to remember the waters when we remember our beginning. Without water no life would exist on this planet. It is a constituent of our very being as well as the most perfect offering -- for it is life, within and containing itself. It can give life, support it, maintain it, and even end it (in the form of drowning or even a storm like I saw this morning).
Offer water in your shrine, remember the Original Waters, and praise life.
Dua Nun! Dua Nut! Dua Heru! Dua Khenty-khety! Nekhtet!

Today the Two Lands are Opened ahead of the New Year Jubilation. This is a festival that I find is very well provided for us to celebrate with the Shemsu and Remetj of Kemet who were not able to be with us at the New Year Retreat -- we'll be meeting in Dua this evening, don't forget!
It is also a day dedicated to Khenty-khety (Wesir), Satet, Nefertem and Aset.
I pray to these Names that all blessings are yours in this fledgling New Year. Know you are loved and the family of Netjer is jubilating with you.

Light lamps in your shrine today in Jubilation. The Eye of Heru has returned complete, in the form of the full moon, and we celebrate in the Ihy (Jubilation) Festival of this month, as well as the Half-month/Full Moon festival!
Today is also a day to honor Ra with lighting of lamps, and also to ask for the blessings of Sobek Who guides the Inundation. We also celebrate the festival of the Bawy or Two Souls, Heru and Set, Who are reconciled before the Inundation and bring Their great strength and power together to help all who are in need.
Go out under the Complete Eye this evening and make a wish.
I pray for all blessings in the Names of Ra, Sobek and the Bawy. May Their wisdom, strength and power enable you and bless you in your life and all your deeds today.

An ancient calendar from the temple of Hethert at Dendera says of today:
Make many offerings on the altar, with incense on the flame, and libate with wine before Netjer.
These offerings and libations should be made to the names of Tefnut, Nebt-het, Aset, and Hedjhotep, to Whom today belongs.
Additionally I ask today that you remember your brothers and sisters in Netjer in your shrines. Ask that all the blessings of the New Year be given today and every day.

If you cannot actually visit a cemetery today, pour cool water and offer honey and oil on behalf of those in the West.
I cannot stress enough how much blessing can be gained from making friends with the Akhu.

Today we dedicate to the honor of the Name of 'Anty. With a falcon's head, one might immediately think He is associated with one of the Heru-Names. But 'Anty is most likely more closely associated with Set, as a "trickster" -- and one of the very first.
Suggested to have a fondness for gold, 'Anty disobeyed Ra and permitted Aset to infiltrate secret meetings being held concerning the inheritance of Her son Heru. With the payment of a golden ring, 'Anty ferried the disguised Aset over to the Holy Isle and was punished by losing His toes.
The memory of 'Anty as a thief persists in Kemetic mythology, where a man who steals donkeys from a peasant is immortalized with 'Anty's name ('Antynakht, sometimes translated Nemtynakht, one of 'Anty's other names). While He can be swayed with shiny things....He is also a fierce protector and the One Who ferries souls across the Great Nile of the Sky, the Milky Way.
Offer something shiny to 'Anty today in order to secure His favor.

In ancient times, today would be the day the Inundation was sighted at its crest, and measurements taken along the Great River to indicate how the year would progress.
We welcome the Inundation of our people, even if it is no longer embodied in the literal Flood of the Nile. After all, even Akhenaten spoke praises for the Nile in the Sky, Who nourishes all.
The waters of Netjer are refreshing and cool, and all may drink therein. Our Inundation this year will be high. Not so high that we might drown in it and lose past successful harvests....but high enough that all who thirst will be sated, and that this year's harvest might be our best yet.
Pour cool water in your shrines and rejoice! Refreshment, in the form of the Purity of Netjer, is at hand.
Hail to Hapi, Great River, Bringer of Abundance. May You bless our year with Your plenteous waves. May we drink Your water and be spiritually refreshed. May we use Your water to purify ourselves and others, and to make Inundations of our own. Hail to Sobek, Guardian of the Inundation. May You Guide us past the rapids of treachery and into safe harbor of Ma'at. May You defend us with Your fierce strength and teach us to ride the River fearlessly.

I pray today to the Royal Couple, Heru of Behdet and Hethert, Mistress of Heaven, that each of our Shemsu who came to Retreat arrives home safe and sound, and with all the happiness and blessings of Netjer.
I hope that all of you are able to spend some time decompressing and considering the events of the weekend before you must immerse yourselves again in the "everyday world." Remember -- there is no part of us which is not Netjer, and so there is no world where Netjer is less important. Secular is a state of mind, not a state of being.
Many things were learned this weekend. Not all of them were easy and some of them in fact will not be learned immediately, but will become known over time, with quiet reflection. Many of you spoke directly to Netjer during a number of Saq oracles. What were you told? Write it down and put it in your shrine, and from time to time reflect upon your Parents' words and learn.
For those of you who celebrated Wep Ronpet on your own -- what was Netjer's message for you? Reflect upon this also.
Be blessed in the love of Netjer which knows no boundaries.

What can we do with ourselves that will make this year better than last year?

At sunrise, the Children of Netjer have honored Netjer, repelled Isfet, and established Ma'at upon Her fair throne as part of the rituals of Opening the Year.

While we had a short time together in order to get sleep for our sunrise services, I was very excited to see so many of our people together. Here's a small picture of our meeting taken by Rishi:
More pictures to come.... love and New Year's wishes to all who cannot be with us in person.

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
The year has ended and we enter the time which is not time -- the Days Upon the Year.
The fifth and last of these days is the birthday of Nebt-het, Friend of the Dead.
Sometimes silence speaks louder than words. In the most profound of silences, the voice of Nebt-het is heard.
Within the shadow, summoning all the power of the Children of Nut, the Youngest of the Great Names is also the Eldest: Nit, the Matrix Herself. If Nit's veil shall not be lifted by any man, Nebt-het is the force that holds it tight, just as Her hair is compared to the burial shroud.
Seek the cemetery today. Find a tree or a headstone, pour ritual water over it, and listen very carefully. You may learn of the Mystery of Time and its keeper, the Lady of the House.
Dua Nebt-het! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: Almost everyone has arrived and Retreat is getting underway! We will be sending pictures and more information as we can; due to a minor technical glitch, that will start tomorrow rather than today. One more day and New Year has come again!

Bless all the children of Netjer, known and unknown! May your coming be peaceful.
The year has ended and we enter the time which is not time -- the Days Upon the Year.
Fourth of these days is the birthday of Aset, Great of Magic, Mother of God.
On Her Day I depart along with many of Her Children and other Children of Netjer for the New Year Retreat.
We are all very excited and very busy getting everything ready for tonight's opening events.
Since we are taking computers with us this year, you can expect to hear more information about the Retreat.
Aset's day has marked the opening of Retreat all three years of its celebration. This is appropriate as She is the Throne, the foundation upon which successful things must first prove themselves.
Our retreats are very successful and we have Aset, Great Lady, to thank. May Her Wings shield anyone from harm during their travels, and lend the ability for our love to reach all those who cannot be with us over the next few days.
Dua Aset! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: Watch this space for more updates, photographs and information from Retreat!

The year has ended and we enter the time which is not time -- the Days Upon the Year.
Third of these days is the birthday of Set, Lord of the Red.
Strength of the desert wind, give us the stamina to reach our goals.
Destroy for us that which we no longer need; shatter our illusions like glass, that we may be brought face to face with Ma'at, boundaryless and free.
Use Your Strong Arm to point the way we must walk.
May we learn from You the instinct to survive and to achieve, to persevere and to win.
Lift our illusions; scour our souls clean and leave us ready to accept Netjer's love.
Dua Set! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: Can you understand why a God Who will not permit you to shy away from the truth might be retranslated, wrongfully, as a Devil?

Second of these days is the birthday of Heru-Wer, Whose Eyes are the Sun and Moon.
Great Hawk of Speckled Plumage, lend Your sharp sword and Your strong arm to each cause requiring justice.
Forge us in the coals of Your smithing-fire; test us as true blades of Ma'at.
Lift us up upon Your mighty wings that we might view the entirety of a situation before making decisions.
Give us the strength and the will to live our lives as they should be.
Dua Heru-wer! Nekhtet!
Thought for the Day: On these days we also honor the Spiritual Birthdays of three of our priests: Imakhu Merybast Sekhauesmutes, Imakhu Djehutymose Qedenitu Ptahhirkhopeshef; and Imakhu Niankhsekhmet Sekhemenma'at Meritamen. Nekhtet for their selfless service to Netjer and Netjer's Children over the past two years, and for many years to come!
Nekhtet also to Ankhesenwesir (Senni) and her husband Sean, who were married on this day before Ma'at at the first annual House of Netjer Retreat in 1998. Happy anniversary!
